Algoritmos del viento | Theo Jansen
Hello!
Today I´d like to talk about an exhibition I went with my dad last week. It was located in Centro Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo in Cerrillos, like the tittle says, it was called Algoritmos del viento by Theo Jansen.
When we arrived, in the outside of the building, there was a strange type of machine with a bunch of legs, like a spider. The author named it Strandbeest, because he created this beast in a beach near his house in The Netherlands; in that place the structure walks by its own, because of the big gales, and obviously, does the complex system of legs and sails. I had the luck to move the machine myself, and it felt so light and easy. Here is a video of me walking the Strandbeest, called Animalis Ordis.
In the inside the exhibition, there were a lot of different types of Strandbeest. Some of them looked very similar to animals or insects, and some others more similar to complex machines. There were some books with sketches and calculations the author made to create the creatures.
I really liked a documentary that explained the whole story of the Strandbeest; the author thought he gave the machines a life, because they can move on their own, and in the coming eras, when the sea levels rise, the Strandbeest will have the capacity to live on their own in the new scene.
What I enjoyed the most, was the inspiration the artist transmits by the creation of a whole new kind of creature, half machine, half animal.
